Staying on Skokholm Island which lies just off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales is my highlight of the year. Its always a bit hit or miss whether you can get there as the boat landing is very reliant on a calm sea…so it always a bit of an adventure getting there. You can feel the stresses of the mainland slipping away along with your mobile signal the moment you step on to the island.
I arrive with a bag full of my favourite wires and depart with lots of new wire sculptures and drawings and bits of scrap salvaged from the island. Its my chance to immerse myself in drawing and making for a week and there is no shortage of bird inspiration. One of my favourite spots is Crab bay - here you are surrounded by flying puffins and the songs of seals and wrens waft up the cliff.
A small selection of wire drawings from my Spring excursion to Skokholm are available through my agent, Leonora Martin Fine Art - here.
